Description

The Nuevo Bécal project is a progressive community initiative to improve the economic and social conditions of all within the Ejido Nuevo Bécal while protecting the region’s richbiodiversity.Itis aTealCarbonproject and the first of its kind to incorporate Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetion, Improved Forestry Management and Wetland Restoration and Conservation.

Project History:

The Nuevo Bécal project is a partnership between Zere and Ejido Nuevo Becal, a community in the Municipality of Calakmul, Campeche, Mexico. The Ejido has been an FSC-certifiedforestsince2018,recognising it as one of the largest pristine forests in the region and its enrichment of local biodiversity. It is known for its innovative forestry techniques, protection of endangered species, and being one of the greatest preservation projects in the Americas.

Community Gain:

The communities stand to gain economic growth and job opportunities in sustainable land-use practices and other areas. The project will also provide access to clean water and improve the quality of life for the community through the implementation of new technologies and infrastructure. Additionally, the community will receive 70% of the proceeds after expenses from the sale of carbon credits, providing an additional source of income.

Carbon Standard:

The project is seeking certification under Verra’s international Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and expects to be awarded the Verra Climate, Communities and Biodiversity  (CCB) standard.

It will be the first project to measure carbon on wetland forests in the Americas, which will help expand our knowledge of the value of wetlands as carbon sinks.

Teal Carbon:

Teal Carbon is a form of Blue Carbon involving the preservation and restoration of fresh water(nontidal) wetlands.Theyhavethe capacity to regulate greenhouse gasses, however the degradation due to changes in land use, pollution and water extraction can release high levels of carbon and methane back into the atmosphere.

Permanence over the project lifetime:

Zere is putting community involvement, infrastructure, social and financial benefits at the heart of the project to ensure long lasting engagementwithpreservingnature. The projects likelihood of long term success is ensured through the utilisation of traditional sustainable land-use practices and the protection of natural habitats and biodiversity.

Cambodia_Map2.png

Description

In Cambodia, 80% of people lack access to clean water. Untreated water and poor sanitation cause up to 10,000 deaths each year, mostly among children under the age of five.

Hydrologic sells clean water filters that enable families to disinfect and safely store drinking water at home.

Project History:

Way back in 2001, iDE introduced ceramic water filters as an affordable water treatment option to benefit public health and environment in Cambodia. In 2009, iDE spun off Hydrologic Social Enterprise Co. Ltd. as a wholly owned subsidiary to scale up filter production and distribution.

Hydrologic’s core business is the production and sale of ceramic drinking water filters. To date, more than half a million of these filters have been sold across Cambodia. Their mission is to make sure that every household in Cambodia is equipped with a filter. Gold Standard carbon credits enables Hydrologic to continue researching and developing purifier technology and to train local producers and distributors, thus scaling up its positive impact.

Community Gain:

With a filter in their homes, families can drink safely. By no longer needing to boil water, indoor air pollution from wood burning is reduced, household fuel costs are slashed, time is saved for women and children, and Cambodia’s vulnerable forests are protected.

Hydrologic has reached nearly two million Cambodians with its ceramic water purifiers

Local Involvement:

A last mile selling strategy creates opportunities for our sale team to educate people how crucial it is to have a filter in their home. Working closely with Village Chief doing group presentations and door-to-door sales. A dedicated customer service after sales is provided through a 2 year warranty program on the filters.

The project also creates rural employment opportunities in filter manufacturing and distribution. Women make up 47% of Hydrologic’s staff, including 60% of top-level managers and 60% of the rural sales force. Hydrologic also offer an installment plan to customers, making them affordable for more Cambodians.

Sawa Afforestation & Reforestation Cameroon

Centre Region, Cameroon

VCS CCB 11 SDG’s

Cameroon_ ARR_Map.png

Description

A VCS CCB certified biodiversity and community focused afforestation & reforestation project in Sawa, Cameroon, with an expertly curated planting programme of species to meet local needs and promote long term success.  Of the trees expected to be planted by the project, 80% will be fruit and nut trees, including avocado, mango, orange, apple, macadamia and cashew – selected by the farmers who are the sole beneficiaries of the harvesting. Around 10% will be indigenous tree species and 10% will be non-invasive plants such as Indian Bamboo.

The project has multiple locations, however, most of the trees will be planted in three villages in the Yoko Sub Division in the Centre Region of Cameroon spanning an area of over 30,000 hectares and severely impacted by deforestation.  Approximately 40% of Cameroon remains covered by forest, however, deforestation has had a major impact in recent decades due to farming, logging and settlement expansion. Between 2001-2020, Cameroon lost 1.5 million hectares of tree cover, equivalent to a 4.9% decrease, and 903 million tons of CO2e emissions.  The Centre Region of Cameroon, where most of the project sites are located, accounted for over half of the trees lost during this period.

As well as promoting new biodiversity, the project stands to protect existing biodiversity as it is located close to the important Mpem et Djim National Park of Cameroon.

17 million Verified Carbon Units over its 41-year project lifetime

Expected Credits:

The Sawa Project is expected to originate approximately 17 million Verified Carbon Units over its 41-year project lifetime (peaking at approximately 480,00 carbon credits per annum). The project started in March 2022 and can be extended after the initial 41 year crediting period.

Local Jobs Created:

This project will benefit communities by providing much-needed job opportunities for younger people in particular, who are often most vulnerable to poverty.

Furthermore, the widespread planting of fruit and nut trees will offer the additional benefit of providing nutrition to these communities. The adoption of traditional farming methods will ensure employment opportunities are maximised.

Community Gain:

DGB regularly engages and consults with diverse stakeholders regarding the project’s impacts and activities. These stakeholders are identified by the local team responsible for outreach and engagement with communities and local, regional and national leaders.

Relevant stakeholders range from direct partners (landowners or community leaders), selected based on interest and eligibility to join the project, to representatives of the government, who are being engaged on an ongoing, regular basis in all areas that DGB has operations.
